Very little is known about this mysterious set. A New York trading card
company called Rainbow Card Co. (which claims to specialize in "scarce
regional limited edition card sets") began selling the set in their 1997
spring catalog for $14.95. The set consists of 8 black & white cards of unusual size
measuring 1-3/4 inches by 3-5/8 inches. The set features caricatures of all
7 main cast members plus the Robot. The back of the cards are plain
white except for a 1967 Gordon Currie copyright statement and a "Printed in
USA" slogan. The cards appear to be unlicensed but since they are
caricatures it's possible that licensing was not required.
Was this card set genuinely first issued in 1967 or is it a 1997
reprint? Perhaps it was originally drawn in 1967 but not published until
now? These are burning questions still puzzling collectors. One rumor is
that this set along with similar sets made for Star Trek and the Beatles
were originally vendor machine prizes but this is yet to be confirmed.
If you actually acquired one of these sets back in the 60s or have any
further information we would be very glad to hear from you.
